The damaging effect watching television has on our view of the female body

http://indy100.independent.co.uk/article/the-damaging-effect-watching-television-has-on-our-view-of-the-female-body--bJMMEZa0wCl

Claiming to have proved a direct link between television and female body ideals, researchers said they were able to isolate the effects of media exposure from other cultural and ecological factors. The research, published in the British Journal of Psychology, found that the highest body mass index (BMI) preferences were found in the village with the least media access, while those living in urban areas preferred thinner female bodies. "The differences in television access allowed us to explore how media exposure affects the size and shape women aspire to be."

It's The New Day - first look at Trinity Mirror's new newspaper

A dummy issue of The New Day, an ‘upbeat, optimistic, impartial’ title.

Calling it “the first standalone national daily newspaper for 30 years”, the company will launch the Monday-to-Friday title on Monday, 29 February. According to a press release issued early Monday morning, it “will report with an upbeat, optimistic approach and will be politically neutral.” The New Day, with a turquoise masthead, will run to 40 stapled pages every day on thicker-than-normal newsprint. It will be available free from over 40,000 retailers on launch day, and will be priced at 25p for the following two weeks before selling at 50p after that. And Trinity Mirror’s chief executive, Simon Fox, said: “Over a million people have stopped buying a newspaper in the past two years but we believe a large number of them can be tempted back with the right product.

13C: January assessment learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

WWW - There are some positives here: a clear opinion on the debate communicated and good understanding of Marxism and Pluralism

EBI - Plenty we need to work on too...

- You don't introduce your case study in the intro, a basic error!

- You need far more examples ... and the ones you quote aren't all correct (the photo of the Syrian child on the beach was not citizen journalism, nor was ferguson).

2) Read through the mark scheme. Of the six different statements, write which you think is currently your strongest and which is weakest. Explain WHY and, for the weakest, what you are going to do to improve in that area.

My weakest point that I have is the ability to stay focused on the question. This is due to me wanting to put as much information about the subject at hand I forget what I am talking about originally which leads to me answering a question that was never even asked in the first place.

3) Read through the exemplar A grade essay. What does this essay offer that yours does not? Identify THREE things you can take from this essay to improve your own responses in future.

Having Key Stats about the case study that boosts their argument.

Contains key media theory
Well structured with punctuation and correct spelling

4) Write ONE new paragraph for your January assessment essay. Ideally, this should be a section you did not cover in your original essay. This paragraph needs to be comprehensive and meet the criteria for Level 4 of the mark scheme.

With New and Digital Media taking over everything with it becoming even more insightful with wide range of competing ideas and opinions from experts and journalists to bloggers and social networkers. But due to the fact that their is so many different opinions out there it has become even harder to find out who you can trust on the internet due to the quantity at the bottom which leads to the question does the internet provide a equal platform for everyone to have the chance to have their opinion heard.

Identities and Film: blog task

1) Read Media Factsheet 142: Identity and Film.

2) Complete the Twenty Statements Test yourself. This means answering the question ‘Who am I?’ 20 times with 20 different answers. What do they say about your identity? Write the 20 answers in full on your blog.

I am supporter of Manchester United
I am on Facebook
I am on Twitter
I am on Instagram
I am on Snapchat

4) Go back to your favourite film (as identified in the lesson). What does this choice of film say about your identity? Are there any identities within the film (e.g. certain characters) that particularly resonated with your values and beliefs?

Not really I just like Scarface because it's a brilliant film nothing more nothing less.

5) Watch the trailers for the five films highlighted as examples of gay/lesbian representation in mainstream film. How are LGBT identities constructed in the trailers and how are audiences encouraged to respond to these representations?

How much does Google's European boss really earn?

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/11/is-it-possible-to-work-out-how-much-google-executives-are-earning

The total wages for Google UK’s 2,329 employees over an 18-month period were £562m, implying an average annual pay packet of £161,000. Included in the total figure were “share-based payments” worth £148m. Workers in Google Ireland take home less than half the pay of their London counterparts, even though Google says the UK operation only provides support to the Irish wing, where the real expertise is. Despite their expertise, the latest accounts show the business paid the 2,577 Ireland staff wages totalling €244m for 2014, giving an average wage of €94,590, or £72,783. Google Ireland has three directors, who were paid a combined sum of €1.6m (£1.3m) in 2014 – despite running a business with sales of €18.3bn (£14bn), which accounts for almost a third of Google’s global revenue.

The Netflix black market: why your login details may not be safe

Fraudsters are harvesting account information through scams and selling them on for as little as 25 cents.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/11/the-netflix-black-market-why-your-login-details-may-not-be-safe

Hackers typically then sell this information for less than the normal Netflix subscription rate of about $9.99 a month. The total number of compromised accounts is not known, but one marketplace documented by Symantec claims to offer accounts for as little as 25 cents. “300,000 in stock. 7 Day Guarantee,” its advert says. Netflix accounts can be used anywhere, and by one to four people at the same time. If others are using a customer’s account, it could lock out a valid Netflix user. It is unclear how large the market is for these services and what dent, if any, they make in companies’ bottom lines. Netflix last month reported it now has more than 75 million subscribers, adding 5.59 million users during the last three months of 2015.

Collective identity: blog task

1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?'

Who are we really in comparison to the media constructed by the man.
Not too long ago everything was different
Bernays proposed ideas originating the notions for the consumer boom of the early 20th century.
20th century brought empowerment and independence
Lifestyles and self image
Internet Developments
2) List five brands you are happy to be associated with and explain how they reflect your sense of identity.

Vans - Because they are fashionable shoes and are cool to wear
Nike - Also have great clothing
YouTube - The TV killer which provide a wider range of entertainment to the general public
Twitter - The Newspaper killer which provides funny videos and interesting news stories
Playstation - Video Game console that I use dominantly and have been using for the past 12 years
3) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about 'style over substance'? What does this expression mean?

Style over substance is all about having to look like you know what to do but really you don't know that much. In relation to that I do believe we live in an era that is associated with this expression because more and more people focus on their social media pages and the way they are looked at to even really care about themselves in relation which is why I believe that the media is more style than substance.

4) Explain Baudrillard's theory of 'media saturation' in one paragraph. You may need to research it online to find out more.

External superficial value exceeds all that is substantial under the veneer of glitter and pretty garlands of flowers and what not.
5) Is your presence on social media an accurate reflection of who you are? Have you ever added or removed a picture from a social media site purely because of what it says about the type of person you are?

I don't use social media dominantly so I don't have a good idea when it comes to me in relation to this question.
6) What is your opinion on 'data mining'? Are you happy for companies to sell you products based on your social media presence and online search terms? Is this an invasion of privacy?

I don't mind this due to the fact that we can just say no into buying the things that they suggest and the worst case scenario is that you buy something that they suggest which isn't a bad thing it's a good it's a win win or everybody the only bad thing about it is that it's normally against people's will because they have to accept terms and conditions but that's just something we accept now as the status quo.

Identities and the Media: Feminism

1) Read Playing With The Past: Post-feminism and the Media (MM40, page 64 - our Media Magazine archive is here).

2) What are the two texts the article focuses on?

Beyonce Music Video (Why Don't you Love me?) and HBO's Pam An
3) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?

How they dress Beyonce in the music video is parts is very sexualised with outfits where she wears skin tight clothing or tights which is used to pleasure men due to men's needs for women to have a perfect body, hair and make up

They showcase the main character of the show in a highly sexual way in the front cover of the magazine. The key part of this is that it generates a male gaze for men and visual pleasures such as a uniform, perfect hair and body with the males loving all does kind of things which males them.
4) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?

I believe that these text do not empower women at all I believe that it is the complete opposite to what they are trying to do. With Beyonce's music video they used gender roles as a way to showcase how far women have come from pre-conceived stereotypes from the 1920's which is what the music video is referencing but I believe that it does more damage is bring back does stereotypes rather than bring them up and if we want to empower women we should be forgetting this era of male misogyny and focus on the future.
5) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.

Feminism: A movement aimed at defining, establishing, and defending women’s rights and equality to men.

Post-feminism: An ideology in culture and society that society is somehow past needing feminism and that the attitudes and arguments of feminism are no longer needed.

Third wave feminism: Was a movement that redefined and encouraged women to be dominant and sexually assertive.

No More Page 3

1) Research the No More Page 3 campaign. Who started it and why?

Lucy-Ann-Collins is the person who started this campaign due to her belief that  newspapers should stop having page 3 and stop having women on newspapers that are only going to be on there for male gaze only.

2) What are the six reasons the campaign gives for why Page 3 has to go?

1) It’s 2014! Page 3 was first introduced in the sexist 1970s. A lot has changed over the last 30+ years in our society, we think it’s time The Sun caught up…

2) It’s soft porn in the UK’s no.1 selling family newspaper that children are exposed to. Until 2003 the models were only 16 (and made to dress up in school ties and hats – seriously!) It’s never been OK. One day we’ll look back on this and think “oh my goodness, we did what?!”

3) What does it teach children? They see page after page of pictures of men in clothes doing stuff (running the country, having opinions, achieving in sport!) and what are the women doing in this society they’re learning about? Not much really, other than standing topless in their pants showing their bare breasts for men. It’s not really fair, is it?

4) Women say, do and think so many interesting and incredible things and should be celebrated for their many achievements. They are people, not things! Not ‘that’. The fact that we hear ‘look at the tits on that’ or ‘I’d do that’ is disgusting, disrespectful and objectifying. Page 3 of The Sun is the icon that perpetuates and normalises this horrible sexist ‘banter’.

5) Every single weekday for the last 44 years in The Sun newspaper the largest female image has been of a young woman (usually of a very particular age, race, physicality) showing her breasts for men, sending out a powerful message that whatever else a woman achieves, her primary role is to serve men sexually. Pretty rubbish that really.

6) The Sun newspaper could be so much stronger without Page 3. Because currently, any story they run about women’s issues such as rape, sexual abuse, harassment, domestic violence or the dangers of online porn is drowned out and contradicted by the neon flashing sign of Page 3 that says ‘shut up, girls, and get your tits out.’

3) Read this debate in the Guardian regarding whether the campaign should be dropped. What are Barbara Ellen and Susan Boniface's contrasting opinions in the debate?

Susan Boniface believes that Page 3 should be banned due to how outdated it is as a page and how it's pretty much a waste of a page which can be used for better things. She also states that back in the 1970's boobs where harder to come by which is why that added them in the first place. But with the raise of the porn industry their is no need of boobs on page 3.

However Barbara Ellen believes that Page 3 shouldn't be banned and that if women didn't want to be sexualised and not having their boobs out for the camera they just wouldn't do it but as long as women are ok in doing it why should they ban it.

4) How can the No More Page 3 campaign be linked to the idea of post-feminism?

Page 3 is one of the staples of Newspapers, it's been around for 45 years now and now we live in a more equal rights world where women want to be tried with the same level of respect to men and they believe Page 3 is outdated and not needed this is how it likes because women do not want this in their newspapers and are fighting to get rid of it so that it never comes back.
5) What are your OWN views on the No More Page 3 campaign. Do you agree with the campaign's aims? Should the campaign continue?

I agree with getting rid of page 3, I agree with a lot of Susan Boniface's points when it comes to her beliefs on page 3 because if page 3 disappeared right now the people that are looking for boobs can just go on the internet and just type in porn and they will have all the breasts they need rather a page of a dying format instead so I agree with the campaign and it should continue on with what it is doing.
6) Do you agree that we are in a post-feminist state or is there still a need for feminism?

I feel like we are in a mix between living in a post-feminist state and still needed feminism because on one hand we now have women making more money than men in their twenty's which is something I never would have thought would ever happen but on the other hand we still have a lot of pre-conceived gender stereotypes that are still prominent showcased by Laura Bates so I believe that there is still a need to have feminism to break down the pre-conceived made by men many years ago.

Identities: Feminism and new/digital media

Emma Watson started the "HeForShe gender equality campaign" which was the first campaign of its kind at the UN to try and motivate as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for gender equality. She then outlines how no country in the world can yet say they have achieved gender equality. - "it is right that as a woman I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decision-making of my country. I think it is right that socially I am afforded the same respect as men. But sadly I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights." It's a balanced debate as she then goes on to identify that men are being imprisoned by gender stereotypes - "Men don’t have the benefits of equality either - young men suffering from mental illness unable to ask for help for fear it would make them look less “macho”—in fact in the UK suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20-49 years of age; eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease." Overall, I think Emma Watson's campaign is valid as it looks at both sides and discusses the issues surrounding gender stereotypes, such as pressures from society to look a certain way.

This article is all about Ched Evans and his struggle to get another football contract from another team due to his troubled past of raping someone and leading to Jean Hatchet starting a campaign to stop Ched Evans to never play football again for a big team as a result his lead to her receiving a massive backlash from men telling her that she should be raped or killed for her reasonable believes.

Ched Evans raping someone lead to him going to prison and when coming out leading to him wanting to play football again which lead to the campaign being started in the first place.

I believe that the campaign is kinda valid. I understand that what he did is an unspeakable act which I understand some people wouldn't want to see him play football ever again. However I believe in second chances because of the fact that if you force him to not play football ever again due to his past he is going to be forced doing jobs that he might not be qualified or not be passionate about so in all I believe that Ched Evans should get a second chance because we have given second chances for example Mark Wahlberg attempted murder and we all go and see his films so I believe that Ched Evans should get a second chance.

Twitter Silence is all about women not using Twitter for a day as a way to demonstrate how powerful and independent they are in comparison to the preconceived ideologies that have been constructed by misogynistic males. They say by doing this will lead to women being inspired by the actions of this campaign, the campaign of silence.

"I just wanted to do a thing" that's why she started the campaign

I believe that this is a terrible idea to showcase the ideology of feminism. I believe men are open to the idea but just don't want to talk about it by disappearing off Twitter for a day achieves nothing, not every person tweets everyday if someone didn't tweet for a day we don't start a worldwide panic, we wouldn't even notice by start a hastag #TwitterSilence is ironic by starting your campaign where the end game is to not be on Twitter which is ridiculous.

Twitter 'leaving us in the dark' over state hacking claims, activists say

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/04/twitter-leaving-us-in-the-dark-over-state-hacking-claims-activists-say

Fifty senior activists notified of the ‘state-sponsored’ hacking attempt on Twitter include Anne Roth, an advisor to the German parliamentary investigation into US surveillance

When more than 50 political activists from across Europe and North America were told by Twitter in December 2015 that their accounts had been attacked by anonymous “state-sponsored actors”, they had very little to go on. In the two months since, campaigners from EFF and developers from anonymity tool the Tor Project have joined the activists in demanding more information from Twitter. In an open letter published in January, the group asked a detailed list of questions, including whether attackers gained administrative access to Twitter’s servers.

PewDiePie, Lilly Singh and Rooster Teeth star in first YouTube Red Originals

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/04/youtube-red-originals-pewdiepie-lilly-singh-rooster-teeth

YouTube has confirmed that one TV show and three feature-length films will be the first exclusive content released for its YouTube Red subscription video service. They will debut on 10 February in the US, the only country where YouTube Red has launched so far. Fans elsewhere in the world will have to buy the shows and films from YouTube, or buy and rent them from the Google Play store. YouTube is hoping that exclusive shows and films will persuade some of its 1bn monthly viewers to start paying $9.99 a month for YouTube Red, although its features also include removing advertising; downloading videos for offline viewing; and a bundled subscription to the Google Play Music streaming service.
